Great... MORE computer problems...
Anyone who's followed me for a while here knows I've got an OLD computer. This machine is original Alienware, custom-built for me ten years ago. It'd held up well, though the controller chip is going and the motherboard has been dying a slow death for the last few years. It's withstood viruses and malware and quite a bit of other crap. Now, though, its time is running out.
About a month ago, a new problem cropped up. Without warning, the monitor would suddenly black out and give me a "No Signal" message, then shut down entirely. Getting it to work again meant forcibly rebooting my computer by holding in the power button until it shut down, then rebooting. This would happen two, maybe three times within the span of a few minutes. I didn't know what was happening until recently.
It turns out that the problem is the video card. It has begun to die and is overheating. Like the rest of the computer (minus the internal harddrive and the CD/DVD drive), the video card is an old part, one of the original parts. So old it has a heat sink instead of a cooling fan. When it overheats, it causes the monitor to shut down, and at least once I saw the mouse freeze before the screen blacked out on me.
When the video card overheats, the only way I can get my monitor working again is to hard reboot. Unfortunately, having to do this too often will cause glitches in the already touchy OS. Eventually it will cause the OS to crash, which will require a reformat/reinstall. And my computer is just too damn old.
My only choice now is to try and get a newer machine. The guys who built my current computer tell me I should get a newer refurbished computer, and they'll put the harddrive from my old computer into the newer one so I can keep all my programs. Unfortunately, I won't have any real money until my GST check arrives in April, and that's only $130. The cheapest of the refurbished machines is $120, not including the taxes. With some luck I may be able to save up a bit more from what I get for taking courses at the Employment Development Center ($70 every two weeks), but I'm not sure what I'll be able to afford when the time comes. If I don't have enough by early April, then very likely I'm screwed.

Le Sigh...
I'm starting to think that some force does not want me to get any art of my OC character, Shogun. Three times now I've tried to commission art of him from three different people, and it's either fallen through or gotten stuck in limbo indefinitely. I've been trying for over a year... It's frustrating >.<
I'm also hitting a dead end on finding anyone to play with me in the co-op courses of Portal 2 on the xbox. There is no one here IRL for me to play with, so my only hope for finding a co-player is on live and none of my friends has it. I don't have it on Steam or for PC or whatever, only for the xbox. Does anybody out there want to pla
Murphy Strikes Again
Today has been one of those days where it just does not pay to get out of bed...
My sister Kate came down from Halifax for the weekend; her friend Krystal is moving west and is holding a party before she leaves. Kate was also selling her truck, the vehicle mom has been driving since that asshole in the pickup truck slammed into me back in August. Mom's been having starter issues with the truck for the last week; something's wrong with either the starter or the ignition. The other night on her way home from work it refused to start at all, and dad had to go "convince" it to behave. With a hammer.
The truck's potential buyer showed up this mo
Worst. Birthday. EVER.
So, today was my birthday. Turning 27 years old. Slept in till early afternoon, was playing a little Left 4 Dead on my xbox 360, was waiting while mom cooked pork chops for dinner. Everything was going fine.
Then dad gets home. And he decides he wants a lemon pie from Superstore. Instead of going to get it himself, he decides to send me. Off I go, grumbling to myself, and pull out onto the main road.
I only just made it past the next street over.
Just past Floral Heights Drive, the next street over from mine, the road takes a curve to the left. I had just reached the curve and was accelerating up to the speed limit when a blur came out of
One of 'Those Days'...
*heavy sigh* Today was one of those days...
Two nights ago my computer had a grand mal system fritz, so I wasn't online at all yesterday. Took it in to get looked at today, and since I was going mom asked me to take the tower for the living room computer with me.
The living room computer is the main computer in the house. Both mom and dad use it. For about a week it hasn't been booting up at all. Mom wasn't able to afford to fix it, but she figured I could at least take it in and find out what the problem was. So in I went, with two computers in the car. Only one of them came home.
My tower's problem was with Firefox. My firefox was set to

I'm sorry to hear that your computer is giving out. It's tough to save up sometimes. I will be hoping that you will be able to get the money you need.
