This, everybody, is Echo, one of my female bettas. I've had her for just under a year now, and she hasn't stopped changing color in months.

When I brought Echo home last December, she had dark brown scales with blue and green iridescence along her back and sides. Not long after I got her home, she started changing color, her scales turning pale starting at her jaws and working down to her tail. It was a slow process, but within four or five months she had turned completely white with pink fins. For another month or so she lingered in white, then started showing dark patches and slowly worked her way to a mottled purple. But instead of turning fully purple, she started paling again. This is what she looks like right now. Her color seems to have stabilized as half-and-half.

Yes, her constant changing color is very cool and makes her unique. But bettas are not supposed to change color like that. Color-changing is a response to stress, and that's generally a bad thing.

Look closely at the picture and you'll see that Echo's left eye is filmed over. She is blind on the left side, which is probably the stressor that's causing the color change.

Her half-blindness doesn't seem to bother her too much, except when she's swimming at speed. She has almost no depth perception, so she tends to run into things. Her tankmate, Ruby, is docile, thankfully, or Echo would have been shredded by now. As it is, Echo is the tank's dominant female.

She was a beautiful fish. Though getting her to hold still for pics could be difficult sometimes

I can imagine my old betta was so difficult to photograph but Mr. Bubbles (my current betta is a bit of a poser :).

Heh, different bettas have different opinions about the camera. Some love to fluff up and pose for it. Others run and hide. Some try to eat it XD; My betta Sunstreaker falls into that last category

Yes, they're funny about it :D. My Bubbles is very fiesty towards anything near his tank. One of my cats drinks out of his fish bowl (don't worry he's safe under his log) but one day he swam out and bit him. Oh he's so silly :)

XD If my cat had still been alive when I started keeping bettas, she would've been trying her paw at fishing, and my bettas would've been keeping one cat hair fir every bite they gave her XD

:D Well my cat now avoids the fish when he is near the surface of the bowl and my other cat freaks out if he's sitting next to it and my fishy flares up at him. God it's hilarious :D :)
